Summer 2014 |
Greetings
from CHM Director David Byrne!
So far 2014 has been a year of travel and blessing. One of the things I have always enjoyed about my work with CHM is the privilege of visiting many churches and ministries along with their leadership. I find that even when things are not planned just right or when there are challenges or even conflicts, as God’s people come together in fellowship beautiful things take place and God’s people get blessed. I also find that I am constantly challenged by the incredible perseverance of God’s people in sharing His word with others. I was privileged to share in several conferences this spring in several different countries about the power of God working through the church - past and present. God has always been working and always calling us to work with Him in the lives of the people around us. One of the books I most treasure is one I found in the trash on the street when a theological seminary was making a move. It is a collection of the “Dying Sayings of Friends” published in 1854 with short stories about the life of hundreds of Christians along with their last words of witness or praise. But those stories of faithfulness are being repeated multiplied times over through the lives of those who serve God in the church around the world today. I love to hear about those who stand up for God in both the great and simple things, with great power and humility to see God’s will completed. Seeing first hand that God is working in the Hispanic churches to raise up a people that will bless His name is an inspiration that I treasure. Sincerely, David C. CHM’s leadership training institute continues to bring fruit among Friends and others. With technology so readily available, there are over 25,000 unique visitors to our site every month from around the world to take advantage of literature, information, and classes that are freely available for strengthening the Spanish-speaking church and its leadership. Through the use of Skype, David is able to meet with some of these groups occasionally to share special presentations and classes to supplement Institute classes and help groups stay on track. The personal touch is an important element for applying leadership principles in the context of community and church. Christianity is not an abstract exercise; it is a living practice of faith in relationship with God and his people. The Instituto ALMA has ways to help. Plans are moving forward for the North American Hispanic Friends Conference to be held the 10-12th of October in Baltimore, Md. AMANA leadership in Southern California is working with the leadership in the local church to make this conference a blessing for Friends across the country as well as in Baltimore. |
Thanking God for Bill
Many of you probably never had the chance to meet Bill Roeh, but he has been
a long-time member of the CHM Ministry Board who generously gave of
his time, talent, and treasure. Even when he moved across the state
in 2006 and later was diagnosed with cancer, Bill continued to faithfully
manage CHM’s finances and to be an encouragement and inspiration. Christ
was merciful and granted extra life, but called Bill to His presence at the
end of June to continue his journey with the Lord. “Thank you Father for the blessing of Bill and for his example. Care for his wife Beth and his family in Jesus’ name.”
Friends Gatherings
Friends leadership from Central and South America came together this year during separate events in El Salvador and Guatemala, and it was a privilege for CHM Director David Byrne to be able to participate through teaching and preaching on history and missions. The response was good in both cases as pastors and leaders considered how they can tap into our heritage in Christ's Church to reach the world. Mexico Yearly Meeting in Mexico City was also a great time of fellowship and ministry. |
Pray for the Baltimore Hispanic Friends Church as it prepares to host the North American Hispanic Friends from Oct. 10-12th |

Please
pray for the Mexico City Church in Viveros del Valle where
they have a one-time opportunity to buy an adjoining property that would
allow their church to expand their ministry by adding classrooms for their
institute program and children’s ministries. They need a combined gift
or loan of $130,000 immediately to purchase this property that they have
hoped for decades to acquire. |

Pastor José Juan Velasquez helped host a meeting in June of key leadership from across Mexico and the U.S. The purpose was to discern the possibilities for a church planting effort in his hometown in Sinaloa, Mexico where José Juan and his extended family have been working to plant a church. Edwin Giron from Aguascalientes will coordinate the efforts of both Mexican and U.S. groups that will be coming together to focus on this EFM mission. Pray for those involved and for an open door in "7 Ejidos" (the town where the church is being planted.) | |
What
is happening with the untenable situation of the immigrants trapped in a
system that makes little provision for people and families? Not
much. Pray for politicians to seriously look for solutions to the issues
that face the U.S. and those who live here as our neighbors. |
