Making Hispanic Ministry the Priority!    CHM Homepage
Fall 2003
Greetings from CHM Director David Byrne!

One of the greatest joys in ministry is seeing how well others can carry on without you! Since CHM is in place to open the way for Hispanic ministry, it has been a blessing recently to be reminded again that God is raising up an army of very gifted leaders who are taking increasing responsibility in the ministries that are important for their communities. What a privilege to see God at work!

Hispanic Conference @ Friendswood Friends Church
ADMINISTRATORS OF GOD'S GRACE

In I Peter 4:10, Peter talks about faithfully administering God’s grace in its many forms. In other words, he calls the church to use all the resources it has to bless the world. This was our theme in the 7th annual North American Hispanic Friends Conference held in Friendswood, TX in October.

Friends came together from across the continent and were challenged in areas of administration and organization in order to maximize ministry. An interesting outcome of these meetings was the decision to put together a proposal by the next conference that may formalize an Association of Hispanic Friends that could supplement the ministries of Yearly Meetings.

Francisco Orozco

Sharing God’s Word

Francisco Orozco is the associate pastor for Hispanic Ministries at the Bethel Friends Church in Hugoton, Kansas. An Instituto ALMA graduate, he inspired and challenged both Spanish and English speakers in the closing service of the North American Hispanic Friends conference in the main service of the Friendswood Friends Church. Francisco preached in Spanish with side by side translation on the power of God in the midst of trials.
God’s Word is powerful to bless and to change lives whatever the culture or language!

“Migrant” Workers
Friends from Coahuila State in Northern Mexico helped to host this years conference.  Since this group could not take care of so many Friends inside of Mexico, they decided to join in with Houston area Friends to minister and contribute their energies and talents—they even prepared the closing meal for over 500 people.  Thanks Friends! Houston Graduate School of Theology  Making Disciples—Preparing Ministers  Instituto ALMA Leadership Training

This semester in addition to helping coordinate the HGST Hispanic Ministry Program, CHM director David Byrne is also teaching the class on Spiritual Disciplines in the certificate level program.
He reports that it is encouraging to get a little closer to some of the students and see how God has used this new non-degree program to draw them closer to Himself.   Some of the students have given their lives to Christ for the first time, which is not what we expected as we opened the program.  Another student has already moved into a full time ministry position where he has seen his church grow.
Pray for God’s continued blessing in preparing these students.  Lord willing, the first students to enter the certificate program will graduate in May!

News & Prayer

F --Emporia, Kansas is to be the latest site for a an EFC-MAYM Hispanic Ministry Church plant.  Churches in the area along with the local church and the Home and Cross-cultural ministries board are coming together to support Tomás Martinez in what he describes as his “last” church plant.  At 70, Tomas feels he has the energy to plant one more church.  Join with him in prayer as he enters in this new work, and ask the Lord for that same kind of commitment and energy for your own ministry!
F
--Join us in praying for God’s will about the creation of an association of Hispanic Friends Churches (see above).  This could be a great tool in God’s hands, but it could also be a distraction to our main call to ministry and evangelism.  The committee to draft a proposal will meet throughout the year and would appreciate your support.

--The Hispanic leaders who attended the latest conference in Texas come from across the U.S. and may come from near your home.  Pray for the leadership of local Hispanic Churches, that their ministry and vision will reflect God’s grace.
