Making Hispanic Ministry the Priority!

June 2004

Greetings from CHM Director David Byrne!

You may or may not have noticed in our letterhead we have some new board members as well as some changes in responsibilities. New board members Jacob Estrada, Craig Davis and Bill Roeh came onboard at the beginning of the year and we appreciate their involvement and look forward to their contributions to Hispanic Ministry. We also deeply appreciate the hard work of Dr. Harold Raley who had to leave the CHM board due to mounting commitments. I praise God for His many servants who minister in His name so well.

Pomona Friends Church

There are many ways that God plants Hispanic churches in the United States.  The Pomona Friends Church is founded, funded, built & maintained by Hispanic Friends and the vitality of their ministry is rich.
It is very impressive how this church works together with a common vision for outreach and ministry.  Members of the church seem to joyously do what they are able to see that God is glorified among them.  Current worship attendance is around 180.Pomona Friends Worship
Pastor Garcia says that he is blessed by the participation of the congregation and that they are not afraid to take on large projects for the Lord like the new sanctuary they are about to build on an adjacent lot.  He tells of one man who was saved out of alcoholism who brought his friends to the Lord.  Two local bars ended up closed and God’s kingdom increased!

Thomas Hoke

New Leadership

Thomas Hoke is the new president of the CHM board and we are very glad to have his help.  He continues with his responsibilities with Friends Disaster Service in the Texas area and also serves with the Alliance of Friends Gulf Coast (AFGC) in planting new churches.
Tom has been a member of the CHM board since 1997 and feels like he can contribute even more as president, at least through this year.  We appreciate his faithfulness to carry on the vision and high standards of past presidents Dr. Harold Raley and Dr. Jack Rea.

Getting Ready
Friends met together recently to consider how to host the next North American Hispanic Friends Conference.  Yorba Linda Friends Church with Latino Pastor Jorge (George) Noreña (2nd from right), Verónica (Saénz) Wadsworth and Peggy Kasper in “sending ministries” along with Pastor Arnoldo Garcia and Dr. Gene Pickard make up the team that is making the preparations.  Dates this year are the 5-8 of August.
There will be simultaneous translation to English for those who would like to attend but don’t speak Spanish.  Come and join the celebration!  For information contact CHM or Arnoldo García (909-596-9114 / arnoldogarcia@netzero.net).

 Making Disciples—Preparing Ministers

The 1st HGST Graduation of Spanish-speaking students in the Certificate in Ministerial Studies program was celebrated the 15th of May.

What a joy to see the spiritual and ministerial growth in these servants of God.  Pray with us that our Lord will continue to anoint their ministries and encourage them in His ways.  Pray, too, as HGST concentrates on its Master’s level classes in Spanish.

News & Prayer

F - Across the country several Hispanic Friends Congregations are looking for new facilities as they outgrow their current locations.  Pray for the Kingston, NY, Philadelphia, PA., Baltimore, MD., Chicago, IL. and Las Vegas congregations as they step out in faith that the Lord will supply their need.

--A Family Camp and Conference led by CHM director David Byrne was held outside of Baltimore for EFC-ER Hispanic Friends Churches.  This is an annual family celebration sponsored by the Baltimore Hispanic Friends Church.  Praise God for the sessions and the work of God’s Spirit throughout the weekend and for the families seeking to glorify God in their relationships.
