Making Hispanic Ministry the Priority!
CHM Homepage
Fall 2004

Greetings from CHM Director David Byrne!

In many ways, my task is to serve as a missionary to the Hispanic Community of North America and I count it a privilege to serve my Spanish-speaking brethren.  On the other hand, I have been struck recently about the reality of the ministry partnership the Anglo church has with the Hispanic church.  The Hispanic church is planting new churches, training future leaders (including English-speaking leaders), opening and supporting foreign mission projects, and demonstrating the power of God as He works among them.  It seems a little arrogant to consider the Hispanic community “our mission field!”  I am just glad to be a partner in ministry with fellow servants of all races and cultures who are serving God and blessing His kingdom—including you and your church!

There are many ways that God plants Hispanic churches in the United States.  The Pomona Friends Church is founded, funded, built & maintained by Hispanic Friends and the vitality of their ministry is rich.
It is very impressive how this church works together with a common vision for outreach and ministry.  Members of the church seem to joyously do what they are able to see that God is glorified among them.  Current worship attendance is around 180.
Pastor Garcia says that he is blessed by the participation of the congregation and that they are not afraid to take on large projects for the Lord like the new sanctuary they are about to build on an adjacent lot.  He tells of one man who was saved out of alcoholism who brought his friends to the Lord.  Two local bars ended up closed and God’s kingdom increased!

Missionaries to MéxicoJeremy & Betty Smuck

During the North American Hispanic Friends Conference in Yorba Linda, CA, Jeremy and Betty Smuck shared their vision for the work they will be opening in Aguascalientes, México through EFM.  Hispanic Friends were excited about the possibilities for partnership in giving and in going.  Yearly Meeting Prayer teams are being organized to visit in the coming months and prepare the way for ministry.

Partnerships in Ministry

The EFC-MAYM followed the lead of EFC-ER this summer in honoring their Hispanic ministries during their Yearly Meeting sessions.
Friends shared in a multicultural worship event that truly reflected the vibrancy of the Spirit’s work among Hispanics.  Some partnership ministries were highlighted including the Bethel Friends Church in Hugoton, Kansas where Pastors Eric Mason and Francisco Orozco (pictured above) cooperate to minister to the entire community through a Spanish-speaking congregation.
Francisco Orozco reports that in recent evangelistic campaigns he has sponsored in the area there have been thousands (yes, no kidding) in attendance including 300 Hispanics at the Hugoton Church.  They are also beginning a 2nd church plant in Liberal, KS.
Pastors Tomás and Lupe Martínez with Emporia host pastor Tom Decker (below) are cooperating to allow the Martinezes to plant a new church alongside the English church.  No one ethnic group can reach all people.  We need each other to make the family of God complete and to truly represent the one who is the Lord of All!

Instituto ALMA Leadership Training Making Disciples—Preparing Ministers  Houston Graduate School of Theology
CHM’s partnership with the Houston Graduate School of Theology to offer accredited pastoral training continues.   We are also reemphasizing our non-accredited Instituto ALMA leadership training materials which are being transferred from VHS tapes to DVD and VCD disks.
Over the years, there has been a great deal of interest from Latin American leaders in the Instituto ALMA video classes  with study guides, but there has not been the means  for easy shipping with VHS tapes as there will be with the smaller disks.
Our calling is to help prepare the leaders who can take their place in the rapidly growing Hispanic Church.  Pray with us for laborers in the harvest.

News & Prayer

F - Pray for the re-editing and distribution for the Instituto ALMA training materials.  This is a time-intensive project that can give multiplying fruit.

Byrne Family

--EFM will have new prayer cards for the Byrne family in the next few weeks to help remind you to pray for them in their work with the Coalition for Hispanic Ministries.

F

-The Family Camp and Conference held outside of Baltimore for EFC-ER Hispanic Friends Churches set the tone for an emphasis on Family life that carried through to the North American Hispanic Friends Conference.  Pray for the families of immigrants that are often under extreme pressures.  Pray too, to see if God would use you to help immigrant families in your community as an outreach of your church.
